Do not continue through a normal battery drop-off

A battery that is hot, smoking or hissing may be about to fail, and it can flare up again after it seems to have stopped. Follow Fire and Rescue NSW guidance and the instructions of emergency services.

  1. Move everyone away from the battery. If there is fire or smoke, get out and stay out.
  2. Call 000 (Triple Zero), even if the smoke or flames have stopped. These batteries can reignite.
  3. Do not handle, move, cover or charge a battery that is hot, swollen, hissing or has ruptured. Do not try to put out a battery fire yourself.
  4. Follow the instructions of Fire and Rescue NSW and emergency services, including on when the battery is safe and where it should go afterwards.
  5. Once emergency services say it is safe, it still must not go in a bin or a normal drop-off; use a specialist pathway.
